A couple of years ago a friend told me that the Lincoln Council on Aging and Human Services was trying to form a “Doo Wop” singing group. I’ve always loved lost 45’s and o-l-d Doo Wop songs from the 50’s and 60’s, so I thought I’d check it out.
Well, only a handful of people showed up, and even fewer come back for the second rehearsal, but eight or so folks decided to give it a go. At 77 I am the youngest of the group, with our senior member being 96 (the gentleman third from the left).
Our “director” is Peter Stewart who moved to Lincoln a few years ago. He has spent his life making and teaching music to school children to seniors. He’s a funny, lovable, affable person and, need I say, has a remarkable resemblance to Santa Claus. (Peter IS an official, registered Santa and does gigs at malls and events throughout the holiday season.)
Peter has also gotten himself a job playing the big Wurlitzer organ at Polar Park, the home of the Worcester Red Sox, fondly nicknamed “The Woo Sox”, a AAA minor league team of the Boston Red Sox. The “Woo Sox” were formerly “The Paw Sox” from 1970 – 2020 while they played at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket Rhode Island.
Well, Peter was able to get Woo Sox entertainment folks to invite the Lincoln COA Doo Wop Team to perform a few songs before the game. What a hoot…and we had a great time. This photo doesn’t capture all of us, but it’s a fun photo anyway,.
