Hang On Sloopy (Three Verse Version) – The McCoys

  1. Hang On Sloopy 3:52

Back to the 60’s for this bubble-gummy song by one time wonders, The McCoys.

This is yet one more song about the challenges of love between people who live on different sides of the track. (e.g. Johnnie River’s “Poor Side of Town”). The song is not deep or illuminating, but then it isn’t meant to be. What is great is the song’s drum intro that, in and of itself, makes the song memorable. The clipped, abrupt ending is memorable too.

One of the reason I’m posting this song is that this is NOT the original, AM Top 40, 45rpm version we all knew. This recording has a “lost” third verse to it. I remember sort of stopping in my tracks when this new verse started playing instead of the song ending after only one verse.

The “Lost” Verse
Sloopy wears a red dress, yeah, as old as the hills (Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)
But when Sloopy wears that red dress, yeah, you know, it gives me the chills, oh, oh (Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)
Sloopy, when I see you walkin’, walkin’ down the street (Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)
I say, “Don’t worry, Sloopy, girl, you belong to me” (Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)
And so I say now
